Dementia Trainings

Having current, accurate information is critical to navigating a suspicion or diagnosis of dementia and to be a strong advocate for your family.  The South Carolina Department on Aging offers education on brain health and dementia in concise classes that are easily accessible and understandable. These programs are free, and all are welcome.

 Classes are offered virtually and in the community. The following is a list of upcoming classes: 

Dementia 101: The Basics

Dementia 101: The Basics (virtual and in-person) offers a comprehensive introduction to dementia including dementia types, stages, warning signs, risk factors, navigating a diagnosis, current treatments, care planning, and support resources available.

This class is offered virtually on the first Wednesday of every month at 1 p.m. Our Dementia Care Specialist team also presents this program in the community. Save the date for our upcoming virtual classes hosted from 1-2 p.m.

Dementia 201: Positive Interactions

Dementia 201: Positive Interactions (virtual and in-person) provides practical communication and problem-solving strategies to support meaningful relationships through a dementia diagnosis. This is most appropriate for family caregivers and those providing support for a person living with dementia.

This class is offered virtually as a webinar every other month. Days and times vary.  Our Dementia Care Specialist team also presents this program in the community. Save the date for our upcoming virtual classes:

Dementia Seminar Series

Dementia Seminar Series (virtual only): A quarterly webinar providing subject matter experts presenting on a specific dementia or brain health-related topic.

The next in our series will feature Brad Cole (MBA,FACMPE), Healthcare Executive Director at USC Brain Health, who will present Mitigating Risk Factors to Reduce Lifetime Dementia Risk. This will include:

  • An overview of USC Brain Health
  • Identifying dementia risk factors by life stage
  • Practical recommendations and resources to address risk factors
