Food Stamps/SNAP
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as the Food Stamp Program, serves as the foundation of America's national nutrition safety net by working to end hunger and improve the health of low-income households. SNAP helps eligible households buy the food they need for a nutritionally adequate diet. In South Carolina, many households depend on SNAP each month to get the food they need to ensure good health. Families, people living alone, people living with roommates, and/or people who are homeless may be eligible for SNAP.

Temporary Assistance for Needy Families
Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), formerly known as Family Independence (FI) and Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC), is a time-limited program that assists families with dependent children when families cannot provide for their basic needs. Families must be residents of South Carolina, be willing to participate in the TANF work program and pursue child support from parents absent from the household. This program is designed to serve both single-parent and two-parent families, as well as households with disabled adults. In many instances, combining services from TANF, Child Support, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Medicaid may play an important part in the family achieving self-sufficiency.
The primary focus of the program is to assist low income families meet basic needs by providing:- Cash assistance;
- Support services;
- Training; and
- Employment opportunities.

Description of Organization
The Department of Social Services (DSS) is a cabinet agency with the State Director appointed by the Governor of South Carolina with the advice and consent of the Senate.
Through its Division of Economic Services, DSS administers economic assistance programs including the federal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program, which provides employment and training for people receiving cash assistance. The Department administers food assistance programs in every county in South Carolina. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a federal benefit to assist low-income citizens in the purchase of food.
DSS provides protective services for children and vulnerable adults.
